I absolutely love fun family activities that promote the creative process! While I do love creating beautiful things with my kids every now and then, I prefer activities that let them explore and discover.
Creativity is the most unrestricted form of self-expression. Children need to be able to express themselves without "rules", judgments, or expectations. They need to be able to color outside of the lines and paste outside of the box. They need to be able to create what is in their hearts and in their mind. Unrestricted creation nurtures a child's emotional health along with teaching them problem solving and social skills.
Creative freedom is something I believe strongly in. Because of this, when our family does activities, we seek out things that are aimed more at the creative process than the end results. While these cookies didn't end up "pretty" they were a whole bunch of messy fun!

It took Livia a while to figure out how to get the cookie out of cookie cutter |
Once she did she was super proud! |
and unstoppable... We ended up with ghosts with multiple arms, witches with bats in their hair, and a pumpkin on the moon! |
TinTin traced the sides of a cookie cutter, |
but then decided he was more interested in the big pile of dough... |
he did an awesome job at taste tester. |
And discovered just how sticky cookie dough gets when wet. |
She experimented between taste tests with different ways to make the frosting look (swirly, jagged, and stripped). She used gel tubes to draw on decorations and faces. |
TinTin on the other hand had fun exploring the texture... |
and frosting himself.... |
and letting his inner chocolate addict out. |
Hope everyone is having an awesome week. Would love to hear about any creative projects you do with your kids!
